קָרְאוּ לָהּ חֶמְדָּה וְהִיא הָיְתָה גַּם
וְגַם כִּי גַּם מִי לֹא בְּעֶצֶם הָיָה בָּא
אִם הָיָה יָכוֹל לָבוֹא לְשַׂחֵק בְּיָמִים
שֶׁל רְחוֹבוֹת מְעוּטֵי רְכָבִים וְרַבֵּי
פִּסּוֹת עָפָר בֵּין הַבָּתִּים וּבָנִים
וּבָנוֹת וְאָבוֹת שֶׁהוֹלְכִים עִם
קוֹלוֹת בִּשּׁוּלִים בְּמַחֲבַתּוֹת מַהְבִּילוֹת
שֶׁל סָבְתוֹת שֶׁקּוֹרְאוֹת בַּחַלּוֹן גַּם
וַאֲנִי קָרָאתִי לָהּ חֲמִימָה
וַחֲמִימְבָּה וַחֲמִילָה וַחֲמוּקָה
עַד שֶׁקִּרְקְרָה לִי הַבֶּטֶן מִדַּי
וְגַם לָהּ כִּי גַּם מִי לֹא בְּעֶצֶם הָיָה
רָעֵב בַּיָּמִים הָהֵם שֶׁהַלֶּחֶם בְּשֶׁפַע
וְהַבָּשָׂר הָיָה בָּא בִּמְעוּטֵי יָמִים
אוּלַי בְּשִׁשִּׁי גַּם
הִיא אָמְרָה לִי שֶׁאִמָּא שֶׁלָּהּ תַּעֲשֶׂה
הָעֶרֶב קְצִיצוֹת מִפֵּרוּרֵי לֶחֶם מָתוֹק
הָיהָ הַטַּעַם שֶׁל
חֲמִימָה חֶמְדָּה גַּם וְגַם.
She Was Called ‘dis
She was called Desiree and she was this and that
because who wouldn’t come play
if he could play back in the days
of streets with few cars but plenty
of dusty stretches between the tenements and boys
and girls and fathers who walked to
the sounds of grandmothers’ steaming skillets
calling from windows but I called her Dessi
and Dizzy and Daisy and Doozy

but meat appeared rarely
maybe on Fridays
she told me that her mother too will make leftover
breadcrumb patties so sweet
